As you can probably tell, we are all pretty excited for our 4th annual Cupcake Day. I wanted to take a moment and remind you of the true meaning of this glorious holiday, helping Chicago’s homeless pets. The Anti-Cruelty Society is this city’s oldest and largest animal welfare organization (and the best in my opinion, but I may be a little biased). Watching the love and devotion that my coworkers selflessly put forth on a daily basis makes me very proud to call the Society my home. On that note, let’s go over some Cupcake Day math:
Every $25 raised provides food, water and care for a cat for a day. The average stay for a kitty here at The Anti-Cruelty Society is about 30 days; it costs a lot to feed all of these hungry mouths!
Every $50 raised helps vaccinate a shelter dog. Dogs leave here with all of their age appropriate vaccines including: Rabies, Distemper, Bordetella and a dewormer.
Every $100 raised will allow the Society to neuter one male kitty, did you know our veterinarians spayed/neutered over 8,000 pets in 2015!?
Every $225 raised will assist in a spay surgery for a female dog, that’s a lot of Cupcake sales, better get baking!
So have fun baking and remember any donation helps us fulfill our mission of building a community of caring by helping pets and educating people.
Here at The Anti-Cruelty Society we believe that every healthy animal deserves a good home – which is why we don’t discriminate based on breeds, age or length of stay. What that also means is that there are no time limits for the animals in our care.
Some cats and dogs may be adopted in a matter of days or weeks – while others are with us for several months. For this week’s animal feature – we wanted to show off the 10 cats and dogs who have been with us the longest.
Introducing our current Long Term Residents!
We received a special little note from one of our on-site pups – she demanded we share it with you:
Hi – my name is Dauphine – and I wanted to tell you about my puppy-love for cupcakes!
You see, everyone around here has been talking about this big event, Cupcake Day, for weeks! Cupcake this, cupcake that, we can barely stand all the treat talk around here! All they gave me was a cupcake look-a-like – I want the real deal!
Despite the sad cupcake stand-in toy, I’m super excited to know that people from all around the city will be baking this weekend to sell cupcakes to help pups like me. My siblings and I were brought up to The Anti-Cruelty Society from Knoxville, Tennessee when we were only a few weeks old – and boy are we glad we came! If we had stayed in Appalachia I don’t know if we would have made it, and now, we’re one step away from our forever homes!
So from me and all my brothers and sisters – thank you. Thank you for reading our Cupcake Day blog, thank you for baking this weekend, thank you for selling on Monday and thank you for supporting shelters like The Anti-Cruelty Society. You’re, quite literally, a lifesaver for dogs like us!
Thank you and happy baking!
Dauphine and friends.
We just absolutely had to share this adorable cupcake decor idea! Simply place pre-baked chocolate cupcakes in mini terra cotta and adorn with green sprouts of fondant. A quick, easy, and less-fatty way to spice up your baked goodies for Cupcake Day!
Sometimes when an animal comes through our doors they’re vaccinated, already altered, hit the adoption room floor and are placed in a new home in a matter of days!
But in other cases the turn-around isn’t quite so fast. For some cats and dogs their length of stay may go from 10 days to 20 to 30 or more! Cats like Oli, who arrived at the Society in September of 2012, and dogs like Gypsy, who has been with us since May, will be here as long as it takes for us to find them a good home.
In an effort to help these animals find placement faster we do many promotions both online and off to give our long-term residents a bit more attention.
By participating in events like Cupcake Day – you too can help these animals! By raising funds that can then be used to highlight their awesomeness and adopt-ability, you’ll play a role in the the re-homing of great animals like Oli and Gypsy.
